Q- What days are practices held?

A- Pop Warner participants are expected  to put in a total of 10 hours conditioning and 10 hours for contact to participate in any scrimmage excluding 30 minute water breaks per practice session. After Labor Day, the expected hours is 8 plus game schedule.  A scrimmage is considered part of practice.  From August 1st (official start date of all teams in the Oahu Pop Warner League) typically practice sessions are held Monday thru Friday 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm.  From Labor Day on, practices will be from Tuesday thru Friday 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The Pop Warner allocates 2 hours for games and scrimmages.

Q- What time is practice?

A- Typically practices are from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Q- What do I need to wear for practice?

A- There are several terms associated with football with regards to what to wear; 1. shorts & t-shirt, 2. top half, 3. full pads and 4. helmet only. 1. means that your child should be wearing gym shorts, t-shirt and football shoes with socks. 2. means that your child should be wearing all of #1 and helmet with chin strap, mouth guard and shoulder pads with practice jersey. 3. means that your child should be wearing all of #1 & #2, practice pants with thigh & knee pads & 3 pocket compression girdle including pads (butt & hip pads). 4. means that your child should be wearing all of #1 and his helmet with chin strap and mouth guard. We require you to purchase a 3-pocket compression girdle for your child at a minimum.

Q- Do I need to have my own practice and game gear or will it be supplied?

A- The practice gear that will be provided to each child are; helmet, chin strap, mouth guard, shoulder pads, practice jersey, practice pants & belt (as needed). You need to purchase the following additional required equipment; 7 piece pad set & compression girdle. As far as game gear, all will be provided the same as practice above including Game Jersey and pants. Please keep in mind that everything that is provided to your child in which he cannot keep when the season is over are on rental between you/your child and the Waialua Pop Warner Association. Failure to return some or all of the equipment issued will subject you to replace them out of your own pocket. IMPORTANT NOTICE, some parents opt to purchase their own equipment for their child (mainly helmet and shoulder pads), this is ok by us providing you purchase reputable brands and bring it to our attention should you do so. If you purchase your own equipment for your child, your registration fee will remain the same as everyone else, we are not setup to accommodate a few individuals who choose to do this. Note: Mouth pieces have to be colored, clear ones are not allowed. The mouth piece must have the keeper strap and be attached to the helmet face mask at all times. Clear helmet visor are allowed only, no tinted ones.

Q- What type of protection gear do I need to play and practice?

A- Basically your child will be provided everything he/she needs with regards to practice and game protective gear, other things you may consider… rib protectors, arm pads and gloves. We have never seen anyone wearing shin guards and very few if any wear a protective cup.

Q- My child plays another sport during the same time, he/she has to miss a day or two of football practice each week, is this OK?

A- Our answer is not no but we discourage this with a passion and ask that you have your child commit and focus on one sport at a time. We want parents to realize that the demands of football are extremely high especially having your child attending each practice session so they may maintain a consistent conditioning/playing level and to ensure they accumulate the weekly hours necessary for safety concerns. It also poses a problem for the coaches and fairness to others on the team as one day your child is there and the next day he's not, then the day after he is and so on...

Q- What days are games held?

A- Mostly Saturdays but Sundays maybe scheduled as well

Q- Where are the games held?

A- Typically at district parks around Oahu. Waialua Pop Warner is in division 2. We may play away as far as Hawaii Kai or as close as Ewa Beach.  Each Business Manager will be given bus arrangements for each team for Bus pickup and drop off times.  Of course we also have home games as well.

Q- Can girls play football?

A- Yes, we have seen many girls playing football especially in the Jr. Peewee or younger divisions and very few in the older divisions.

Q- If girls can play football, do they require additional protection gear?

A- No

Q- If my school grades are not so good, can I still play football?

A- No, your child has to meet an established GPA level set forth by the Oahu Pop Warner Association. 70% is required to be eligible to play.  If they are below that they will be given specific instructions to carry out by OPW (Oahu Pop Warner).  If they are not followed they will be en-eligible.

Q- Do I need to know anything about football?

A- No, the coaches will try their best to teach your child to the best of their ability.

Q- Is this flag football or tackle football?

A- Tackle, we do want to add that you should be aware that football is a very demanding, intense and rough sport (Contact Sport). Having solid discipline, focus and being in good condition are the keys to a successful season. For those of you who are not familiar with the game of tackle football and really have only experienced it by watching games played on TV, at a stadium, or other, need to know that the practice sessions/preparation leading up to them are extremely intense and the part of tackle football most people don't see. The "games" are the easy/fun part for the players. If you ever have a chance to watch your child's practice sessions we encourage you to do so.

Q- Can I get hurt playing football for Pop Warner?

A- Yes, this applies for most all physical sports, football is more physical than most other sports because its a game with constant contact.

Q- Are my Mom and Dad expected to help in any way?

A- No, however, we encourage parents to get involved. We are trying to build the program and now more than ever we need your support. Like in many non-profit youth sports organizations, volunteers play an important role for the continued success of the organization. The more positive support we can have the better!

Q- Are players required to participate in fund-raising?

A- Yes, we are trying our best to minimize the amount of them. We have other options that may be available.

Q- How long is the season?

A- About 3 months, from early August to early November not including post season. If a team qualifies for post season play the season can run through November and well into December.

Q- Is this a serious league or do we play for fun?

A- This is an excellent question… as far as the league we belong to, The Oahu Pop Warner Association, nobody plays strictly for fun. We do want to add that we do have our fun moments. This league is highly competitive and all teams prepare and approach it with this thought in mind. The bottom line is that nobody can go into a season with “fun” as the primary thought in mind. Again, football is a very demanding, intense and rough sport (Contact Sport). Having solid discipline, focus and being in good condition are the keys to a successful season.

Q- Are the coaches experienced? Certified?

A- The coaches are not all experienced however, they are all certified by the Oahu Pop Warner Association, they must carry CPR and First Aid Training cards and have all had to pass a criminal back ground check done by OPW.

Q- Are there travel accommodations for games played away from home?

A- Yes, from Waialua Rec. Center TO AWAY GAMES ONLY!!! (no transportation will be provided by WPWA in 2008 for return trip. Please plan ahead/make necessary arrangements if you cannot make it to your child's game so as to be sure he has a ride back home). Keep in mind that the bus schedule may not fit into your personal schedule so you may have to make prior arrangements should they not.

Q- Do I get to keep my football gear?

A- For 2008, your child may keep the following issued from WPWA; his game jersey, mouth guard and weigh in clothes, everything else that are being rented from WPWA must be returned.

Q- Do I get to pick the position I want to play?

A- No, the coaches make that decision solely based on the child’s ability, maturity and capability.

Q- Is my child guaranteed playing time in each game?

A- Yes, based on the team's roster size for each specific game, every child has to play a minimum amount of plays per game, this is a rule set forth by the Oahu Pop Warner League and it's called MPR (Mandatory Play Rule). However, coaches establish local team rules and some disciplinary actions/circumstances may cause the coaches to override this rule in which case your child may not play at all. Some examples are; missing excessive practice sessions, injury, fighting, breaking team rules excessively, other.

Q- How many kids per team?

A- Each team/division can have a maximum of 35 players.

Q- How many teams/divisions does Waialua have?

A- Typically 4; Midget, Pee Wee, Jr. Pee Wee and Mitey-Mite... subject to change.

Q- How many games will we be expected to play?

A- Typically 8 games (one per week) and a bye week make up the regular season.

Q- If my son/daughter quits after the first game, will be get our money back?

A- No.  Once your child sets foot onto the practice field your assessment for Oahu Pop Warner is paid in full to cover Regional, National, Local fees and Officials and Insurance fees.  If your child has never set foot onto the field prior to August 1, yes you should be entitled to a refund subject to admin fees.

Q- I have more than one child that would like to play football, is there a discount?

A- No

Q- Do you offer financial assistance for families in need?

A- Yes,  It can be arranged with the Waialua Pop Warner Association only.  We will arrange for your parents to fundraise the amount necessary for you to play. You will have to fill out a commitment form provided by the Waialua Pop Warner Association.

Q- When does my child have to meet the weight requirement?

A- TBD, please see the Business Manager for respective division.

Q- My child won’t be able to make the first two weeks of practice.  Will that be a problem?

A- Yes, before each child can participate in full pad practices, he needs to have a minimum of 10 hours of shorts and t-shirt conditioning. Further more, the first game is about 4 weeks from the first day of practice, your child will have missed too much time. Again we like to reiterate that football is a very demanding, intense and rough sport (Contact Sport). Having solid discipline, focus and being in good condition are the keys to a successful season.

Q- I have taught my child that school is a priority.  If I keep him/her home to finish a project/homework, will he be penalized for that or will the coach support my efforts?

A- We believe the same however, we have consequences for missing practices in place for safety concerns and to be fair to all others. We need your child to get a certain amount of hours in each week so he may maintain his playing shape, if he does not come more often than he does, your child’s safety will be at risk.  The great thing about football is that it teaches each child to be in balance with their scheduling by being punctual, having self discipline, motivating self to setting higher standards and remembering that with hard work and effort on their part, rewards will come their way.
